The implementation of SDG 11 – sustainable cities – has been a challenge for governments in recent years. Among the most challenging aspects for the realization of the goal, we have the provision of adequate housing and the democratic management of land. Considering the specific context of the Global South and the ineffectiveness of its policies to deal with the issues raised, it is essential that the debate explore new models and tools that can address them more adequately.

In this scenario, the proposal arises to broaden the debates on the Community Land Trust, an internationally recognized model that has great potential to face the challenges of housing and democratic management of land, especially in the Global South. The model is foreseen in the New Urban Agenda as a tool to ensure sustainable housing but, despite the signatory states having made a commitment to support CLT initiatives, it is a model that is still little known in the Global South.

The event brings together international experts on the subject, with a focus on practices rooted in the Global South, in order to debate the potential of the model for the construction of more sustainable cities in line with the SDG 11 of the New Urban Agenda. It is part of the Urban October 2022, a UN-Habitat initiative for the dissemination of events that explore topics such as the right to housing and the city.
